Play Buffet: Incorporating Play into Daily Routines

Children learn best through play. The Play Buffet is a way to think about offering your child a variety of play experiences — just like choosing from different foods at a buffet. Each type of play supports different areas of development. These include Cognitive/Fine Motor, Language/Communication, Sensory, Gross Motor, and Social/Emotional. By making sure that your child “samples” from each area throughout the week, you are helping them grow in well-rounded ways.

Morning

  • Sing a short song while getting your child dressed (Language/Communication)
  • Let your child choose a toy to carry around while getting ready (Cognitive/Problem Solving)

Mealtime

  • Have your child pretend to “feed” a stuffed animal, doll, or other toy (Social/Emotional)
  • Offer your child finger foods that encourage pincer grasp (Fine Motor)

Bathtime

  • Pour water from cups (Sensory/Science)
  • Use waterproof books or sing songs (Language)

Outside Play

  • Ride-on toy or push a wagon (Gross Motor)
  • Collect rocks, leaves, or sticks to explore textures (Sensory)

Car Rides/Errands:

  • Play peek-a-boo with a scarf (Language and Social)
  • Hand your child a toy with buttons or textures to explore (Fine Motor/Sensory)

Before Bed

  • Read a short book together (Language)
  • Offer a soft stuffed animal to snuggle (Social/Emotional)

Note for Families: These are general guidelines meant to spark ideas and variety in play. Every child develops at their own pace — adjust based on your child’s unique needs, skills, and interests. Always consider safety first: supervise closely, avoid choking hazards, and choose age-appropriate materials.
