My name is Kelli. My 3-year-old son has been receiving speech therapy since he was 27 months old. He was recently diagnosed with a moderate phonological disorder. Although his receptive and expressive language skills are age appropriate, his articulation of sounds is of concern. With therapy, he has made huge gains; however, he continues to have many errors in his speech. I still find myself “translating” his speech for others regularly. While I have always been grateful that his is developing at age-appropriate levels in all other areas, I still worry about him. I want my son to be able to communicate effectively with his PreK teachers, and most importantly, I want him to have the confidence to approach peers so he can make friends. He recently qualified for speech therapy through the school district, and we have also decided to supplement that with private therapy on a weekly basis. My goal is that he will no longer require speech therapy when he enters kindergarten, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it!
